From Attitude to Action: Processes and Dynamics of Radicalization and Extremism

This seminar examines the processes and dynamics of radicalization and extremism. It introduces key challenges in defining and conceptualizing these phenomena and discusses how different theoretical perspectives and measurement approaches shape research in the social sciences. The course then explores the diverse factors associated with radicalization, ranging from individual-level attitudes and psychological mechanisms to social networks and broader socio-political and media contexts. Particular attention is given to the role of social media, current events, and media narratives in shaping perceptions and contributing to the emergence and spread of extremist ideas.

Teaching Initiative Engage.EU

This interdisciplinary, international online seminar explores the causes, dynamics, and consequences of anti-democratic developments in Europe. Bringing together perspectives from sociology, political science, law, and media studies, students engage in comparative analysis of radicalization, polarization, democratic backsliding, and freedom of expression across European contexts. Developed in collaboration with partner universities in France, Spain, and the Netherlands, the course fosters cross-national dialogue, interdisciplinary thinking, and collaborative skills, while equipping students with analytical tools to critically assess contemporary challenges to democracy and strategies for strengthening democratic resilience in Europe.
